This image was modeled completely in Bryce 3D from 5035 native objects and three Poser skulls. It is based on an image called "Fallen Angel" originally created in 3D Studio Max by Neil Blevins of Soulburn Studios. I was hoping to get an objective evaluation of some of the techniques I'm using by recreating an existing, technically challenging image. I made extensive use of the Terrain Editor and the multi-replication function to create and position many of the objects.
I ran into a stone wall, however, trying to recreate the incredible lighting effects of the original. Even though my first attempt was pitiful by comparison, my computer still balked with an estimated render time of nearly 5 days. This final version is smaller with significantly fewer volumetric lights and still took over 12 hours to render. I used one spotlight, one radial light and Peter Sharpe's Streaming Light Rays Tutorial.
Oh well, I think I'm a modeler at heart anyway, so I'm still pleased with the way the alien thingy turned out.
Special thanks to Neil Blevins for graciously allowing the use of his original concept and design. For a mind blowing experience visit Neil's Soulburn Studios..
